Menopause Blood Tests
Hormone testing to support your menopause diagnosis and treatment
Blood tests are not always needed to diagnose menopause — for most women over 45, the diagnosis is based on symptoms alone. But in some cases, especially for women under 45, those with ongoing periods, or those considering HRT, hormone blood tests provide valuable clarity. Our Hull clinic offers FSH, oestradiol, AMH, thyroid, prolactin, and other relevant tests with same-week results.
Book My ConsultationWhen Are Blood Tests Needed?
For women over 45 with typical menopausal symptoms, blood tests are usually not necessary — the diagnosis is clinical. Blood tests become more useful in three situations: women under 45 where premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is suspected, women on hormonal contraception where symptoms may be masked, and women with atypical or complex symptoms where other conditions (such as thyroid disorders) need to be ruled out. Our specialists will tell you honestly whether a blood test is likely to change your management, before you commit to one.
What We Test
The most common test is FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), which rises as ovarian function declines. We also test oestradiol, the main oestrogen produced by the ovaries, which typically falls in menopause. AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone) gives a snapshot of ovarian reserve and is particularly useful for women considering pregnancy. Thyroid function (TSH, free T4) is checked because thyroid disorders can mimic or co-exist with menopause. Prolactin is sometimes measured to rule out other causes of absent periods. All samples are sent to a UKAS-accredited laboratory and results are usually returned within 48 hours.
How the Process Works
After your specialist consultation, we arrange your blood test at a phlebotomy service convenient to you — there are several in Hull, Beverley, Cottingham, Hessle, and the surrounding East Yorkshire villages. You can usually be tested the same week as your consultation. Once results are back, your specialist reviews them and discusses the next steps with you, either in a follow-up appointment or via a secure telehealth call. We send a copy of your results to your NHS GP with your consent, so your ongoing care is co-ordinated.
Costs and Turnaround
Private menopause blood tests in Hull typically cost between £85 and £160, depending on which markers are requested. Most basic panels (FSH, oestradiol, thyroid) are around £85 to £120, with more comprehensive panels including AMH and prolactin in the £140 to £160 range. Results are usually returned within 48 hours of your blood draw, and we aim to discuss them with you within 5 working days. If cost is a concern, we can refer you to your NHS GP for the same tests at no charge, although turnaround may be longer.

Around 1 in 4 women experience symptoms that are atypical or masked by hormonal contraception, where blood tests provide the only reliable way to confirm a menopause diagnosis. (Source: British Menopause Society, 2024 consensus statement)
Common Myths vs Facts
You always need a blood test to diagnose menopause
For most women over 45 with classic symptoms, menopause is a clinical diagnosis and blood tests are not needed. They are most useful for women under 45, those on hormonal contraception, or those with complex symptom patterns. Our specialists will tell you honestly whether testing will change your management.
A single FSH result is enough to confirm menopause
FSH fluctuates significantly during perimenopause, so a single raised FSH does not necessarily mean you are in menopause. Two raised FSH results, taken 4 to 6 weeks apart, alongside your symptoms, give a much clearer picture.
Blood tests can tell you exactly when menopause started
Blood tests give a snapshot of your current hormone levels, not a timeline. Many women have months or years of fluctuating hormones during perimenopause, and a single blood draw may not capture the full picture. Your symptoms and cycle history are usually more informative than any single test.
