Strong Bones. Stronger You. Menopause Support That Looks Beyond the Symptom
At our menopause clinic in Hull, we help women take proactive steps to protect their bones, maintain strength, and reduce the risk of future fractures – all while supporting overall wellbeing during this stage of life.
Oestrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining bone density. When oestrogen levels drop during menopause, bones can begin to break down more quickly than the body can rebuild them. This process is silent – you won’t feel it happening – but it significantly increases the risk of fractures, especially in the hips, spine and wrists.
By the time a break happens, it’s often a sign that bone density is already low.
That’s why early prevention is key– and that starts with awareness, support and simple, sustainable changes.
Signs You May Be at Higher Risk of Bone Loss
Bone thinning doesn’t typically cause symptoms until a fracture occurs,
but some risk factors to look out for include:
Early or medically induced menopause (before age 45)
Family history of osteoporosis
Small body frame or low body weight
Smoking or heavy alcohol use
Sedentary lifestyle
History of eating disorders or long-term steroid use
Poor diet lacking calcium or vitamin D
Certain medical conditions
If you fall into one or more of these groups, a proactive bone health plan is especially important.
Women can lose up to 20% of bone density in the 5–7 years following menopause
Osteoporosis affects 1 in 2 women over 50
Many women don’t realise they have it until they experience a fracture

Why does menopause affect bone health?
During menopause, your oestrogen levels naturally decline—and oestrogen plays a key role in maintaining bone density. As a result, many women experience accelerated bone loss, which increases the risk of developing osteoporosis. That’s why it’s important to monitor and support bone health during this stage of life.
Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weaker and more brittle, making them more prone to fractures. Risk factors include age, family history, early menopause, low body weight, smoking, and lack of exercise. A bone density scan (DEXA) can help assess your risk and guide treatment or lifestyle changes.
Plenty! Weight-bearing and resistance exercises (like walking, dancing, or light weight training), a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, limiting alcohol, quitting smoking, and maintaining a healthy weight all support bone strength. In some cases, HRT can also help reduce bone loss by maintaining oestrogen levels.
Yes, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is often recommended as a way to help prevent bone loss in menopausal women—especially if started around the time of menopause. It can maintain bone density and reduce fracture risk, but it’s important to weigh up the benefits and risks with your practitioner.
If you’re postmenopausal, have risk factors for osteoporosis, or are concerned about bone health, it’s worth discussing a bone density scan (DEXA) with your specialist. Early detection can help you take proactive steps to protect your bones before problems develop.
